Shocking air #pollution levels in #Shanghai tonight. Almost 500 on a scale that says 100 is bad. #smog #china http://ift.tt/IKsvNr
#Chinese #language lesson no.6.
On top is ‘huo’, meaning ‘fire’. I shouldn’t need to point out how it resembles little flames reaching skywards ;-)
Below is ‘shui’, meaning ‘water’. Remind u of the splash a drop might make on the ground?
I’ve heard it said Chinese is a difficult language to learn. I have to strongly disagree. Especially in a world that contains such languages as Russian, Japanese, & the trickiest of them all - English! http://ift.tt/1kdCiYg

#Chinese #language lesson no.5.
Here’s an example of how endlessly fascinating this language can be. First is ‘ri’ meaning ‘day / sun,’ & derived from a pictogram of the sun. Second is ‘yue’ meaning ‘moon / month,’ & derived from a pictogram of the moon. Finally, when u add them both together, u get ‘ming,’ meaning ‘bright’ but also used in such compound words as ‘tomorrow.’ Easy to remember if u think of a cycle of the sun as a day, a cycle of the moon as a month, & add them together u get a bright tomorrow. Kinda silly, but it makes the language very colourful to think with ;-) http://ift.tt/1cl8xUH
My recent stay in Macau gave me the chance to shoot up and down that town, collecting a good set of stock images of the attractions and landmarks. This photo ended up on the cover of the on-board magazine of TurboJet, the high-speed ferry that runs between Hong Kong and Macau. Unfortunately, it was also the same ferry that recently collided with an unknown object under the water’s surface, putting many passengers in hospital. Im sure it had nothing to do with this photo, though!
Whenever I see expat party photos in Shanghai - foreigners partying like they travelled all the way here to party like they’re still at home - I’m reminded of Travis Bickle’s soliloquy about NYC in Taxi Driver, so easily adapted …
“Whatever it is, you should clean up this city here, because this city here is like an open sewer you know. It’s full of filth & scum. And sometimes I can hardly take it. [You] should just really clean it up. You know what I mean? Sometimes I go out & I smell it, I get headaches it’s so bad, you know… They just never go away you know… It’s like… I think that [you] should just clean up this whole mess here. You should just flush it right down the fuckin’ toilet.” Amen ;-)
